SCAMwatch is a website run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). SCAMwatch provides information to consumers and small businesses about how to recognise, avoid and report scams <http://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/694011> . Scams that are reported to SCAMwatch will be analysed by the ACCC.
Many scams originate overseas or take place over the internet, making them very difficult to track down and prosecute. If you lose money to a scam, it is unlikely that you will be able to recover your loss. The ACCC publishes this website to help consumers recognise and prevent scams.

A new online news site will keep communities informed of crime in their local neighbourhood and policing issues impacting their lives, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland recently announced.
He said he hoped the regular release of crime statistics will make communities aware of what is happening in their local area so they can take preventative measures.
“We know that a majority of people access the internet both at home and at work. Education is very important. If community members can see and learn what types of crimes are being committed in their backyard, they can work with police in preventing these crimes,” Mr Overland said.

BACKGROUND:
Chloe Jones and Senior Sergeant Mark Standish discussed how an agreed monthly theme for Neighbourhood Watch would aid NHW and Victoria Police, Media & Corporate Communications Dept to work closely together to achieve shared goals.
A review of the monthly themes was conducted in-line with the current calendar of events for Victoria Police, Australian and State Government. By aligning ourselves with these events NHW can hope to increase opportunities to tie in with events/media opportunities that are already in place.
A move to monthly themes would also ensure that each NHW group would be seen to be focussing on the same crime/issue and that in turn would strengthen NHW across the state.
By consistently repeating messages through current NHW media opportunities and in-line with the Victorian state governments focus, we can raise the profile of NHW to show how they proactively address crime within the community.
A revision of the monthly themes will also ensure that current and emerging crimes are addressed, which will attract the next generation of NHW volunteers, in-line with opportunities to re-launch.
Careful consideration has been given to each theme which is detailed below.

Identity-related fraud is a growing concern in Australia. Today it
is possible for some-one to obtain a range of identifying documents
and/or information through fraud, deception or theft. Completely false
documents can also be created using stolen personal information. These
documents can then be misused in order to profit at our expense. For
example, bank account details, date of birth and tax file numbers can
be used to take funds out of bank accounts or fraudulently apply for
loans.
